A Sherbet Seller
Amasya, near the Black Sea is one of Turkey’s most beautiful cities, located in the narrow cleft of two rocky hills along the banks of the Yeşilırmak River. It has a history dating back 3000 years and many civilizations have left priceless relics of their cultures. The city also has many architecturally precious buildings, such as the Ottoman houses along the river’s edge.

There is so much to see in Amasya and it would be impossible to visit everything in one day. Our highlights include the Rock Cut Tombs of the Pontic Kings, standing high above the river and the ancient Citadel located on the edge of the town . A steep climb to the top rewards you with magnificent views over Amasya.. As you walk through the back streets you pass by traditional Turkish mansions, such as the well preserved 19th century Hazeranlar Mansion that has now been perfectly restored. There are also many old fine mosques, for example the 13th century Seljuk Burmali Mosque, and the 15th century Yıldırım Beyazit Mosque complex. However, one of the most famous sights of all, is the old Ottoman houses huddled along the river, overlooked by the imposing walls of the mountains. Like a secret jewel, Amasya is set apart from the rest of Anatolia in its remote mountain valley, waiting to be discovered.
