Petra

As you go further into this ancient city, it gradually unfolds, one monument leading to the next for kilometre after kilometre. The sheer size of the city and the quality of beautifully carved facades is staggering and leads one to reflect on the creativity and industry of the Nabateans who made Petra their capital more than 2,000 years ago. As well as the Treasury, some of the best sites in Petra are the monumental tombs, high place of sacrifice, Theatre, Colonnade Street and the Byzantine church.

All have been carved deep into the rock and remain staggeringly well preserved. If you have the energy you can climb up to the Monstery, a monument itself of great interest and on par with the Treasury. Its worth the long climb, as at the top you will be rewarded with exceptional views stretching out over the Araba Valley.

Petra was the capital of the ancient Nabatean Kingdom and was an important trading post. The Nabateans established an elaborate network of caravan routes, which brought spices, incense, myrrh, gold, silver, and precious stones from India and Arabia, to be traded onto the west. From the wealth they acquired, they adorned their city with palaces, temples, and arches.

Finally, Petra is an enchanting place that captivates and excites the senses. Its overwhelming size, rich textures and stunning surroundings create an ambiance almost impossible to describe. This breathtaking site is every traveller's dream and we recommend that you spend two full days exploring this treasure.
