Wadi Rum

Everywhere in this strange and empty place are indications of man's presence since the earliest known times. One can find flint hand axes scattered around and scratched onto the rocks and at the foot of the mountains are the names of ancient travellers. In the centre of the valley an elaborately carved temple bears witness that Wadi Rum was once a holy place for the Nabateans.

As you travel by 4WD Jeep look to the north and you will see the Seven Pillars of Wisdom, huge natural columns that vary in height. The true size of the desert and mountains at Wadi Rum becomes real. There is no feeling to compare with being in the wilderness, with pinkish sand beneath your feet and no sound but the wind cutting across the surface of the rocks. Daybreak at Wadi Rum must surely be one of life's greatest experiences. The desert has been inhabited by the nomadic, Bedouin people for generations, living in black goat’s hair tents and following their flocks from water hole to water hole.
