Pammukale

Pamukkale was called Hierapolis in ancient times and is located in beautiful surroundings rolling along the edge of the mountains. People are amazed by this natural phenomenon which is known as the petrified waterfalls. Lustrous white calcium formations, created by years and years of calcium rich mineral water tumbling over the cliff edge form what is literally translated as the ‘cotton castle’. The calcareous salts running off the plateau’s edge have created this fantastic formation of stalactites, cataracts and basins.

Due to the rich resources and hot springs, the Romans who were always partial to the pleasure and the benefits of bathing, established the spa city of Hireapolis, now called Pammukale with impressive ruins standing amongst the olive and cypress tress. The Romans claimed the hot springs had therapeutic powers and the waters were piped throughout the ancient town.

Exploring the site on foot, you should not miss the Theatre and the Temple of Apollo. Built under the reign of Septimus Severus (193 – 211), it is one of Hireapolis’ finest buildings. It is entered via the wings, then finally beneath the stage and into what would have been the area of the orchestra. Other sights to see are the Museum, Southern Baths, Byzantine Basilica and Church. And after a busy day exploring the site you can swim and relax in the hot springs, just like the Romans.
