Germa

The village of Germa is located in the Fezzan region of Libya north of the Acacus Mountains. Now dry with a sparse agricultural economy this was once home to the Garamantes, a warrior nation who originated from the Tibetsi region of the Sahara and managed to resist Roman domination. There are two ruin areas, Garama and Zinchecra, about 2 km north of Germa.

At Garama there is a fort and a number of normal houses. Up the hill is even older Zinchecra. This was used as a burial site, after the inhabitants of Garama moved down to the river; originally the inhabitants got their water from a natural spring here, and stories tell of a large lake as well. The spring still exists, but of the lake, only salt beds now remain.
