Essaouira

Horseman
With its crescent beach and ramparts, Essaouira is a magical town. Lying due west of Marrakech on the Atlantic coast, the town has an enjoyable relaxed feel. Fortification walls keep the Atlantic at bay to its west, while the five huge gates welcome you on its landward sides. Watching the sun set over the sea while standing atop the ramparts, or drinking sweet mint tea in the main square as the night falls are enchanted moments. The town is joyfully traffic free. Men pushing laden carts keep the town moving.
A local market to the north sells everything from; fruit and vegetables to the latest cds. To the south by the harbour, the fishermen mend their nets, while the fresh catch is cooked for you on street side stalls.
Beautiful horses can be ridden along the beach, or you can spend your time having a relaxing drink after a day of shopping in the many local craft stalls. Essaouira is a small town and best explored with little or no plan, just wander through its attractive streets and see where you end up.
