Rock Carvings at Gobustan
Located in the volcanic desert on the Caspian shore to the south-west of Baku , lies Gobustan. The mountainside of outcrops and caves is covered in thousands of rock paintings from the early stone age, approximately 10,000 years old. The pictures depict people, animals, religeous rites, work, hunts and dances. It is a unique site, extremely interesting for lovers of history and archaeology. The Roman legionnaires who passed this way during one of their Transcaucasian campaigns also left an "autograph" here.
A trip to Gobustan will take just over half a day and one can also see the unique mud volcanoes of the area which splutter forth mud instead of molten lava.
