High Atlas Mountains

High Atlas Mounatins
Whether you are driving over or walking in the High Atlas Mountains, you will be in awe of their beauty. Driving the Tiz-n-Tichka high pass is one of the highlight of any trip to Morocco. Leaving the Dades valley floor you’ll wind your way up and across this majestic range. On route you’ll witness, the little changed lives of the mountain hardened Berbers, before descending to the warm plains around Marrakesh.
The High Atlas Mountains provided a safe refuge for the Moroccan Chieftains, during the French occupation, as described by Gavin Maxwell in 'Lords of the High Atlas'. Much to the French annoyance, the Berbers caused no end of trouble to the French soldiers when crossing the mountains.
At the heart of the Range lies Jebel Toubkal, North Africa’s highest mountain. At 4,165 metres its peak is snow capped year round. Imlil, a small Berber village at its base, makes for a brilliant starting point for many day walks, or even to climb Toubkal itself. The Kasbah Du Toubkal, sits on a small mountain spur, and affords the most wonderful views. The Kasbah’s interior is of traditional design and the terrace is an idyllic spot to relax or recover from the day’s exertions.
