Kratie
Lying on the banks of the Mekong River, Kratie is a quiet and very picturesque town where the war was fairly kind to the French architecture and infrastructure, unlike many places around Cambodia. Consequently, there are some nice-looking homes of French and Khmer style scattered about – sturdy wooden structures, with dark-red roof tiles – adding to the pleasant feel of the place.
Situated upon the only hill around Kratie is the Buddhist monastery of Wat Phom Sambok offering great views of the surroundings. A long set of steps leads up to the entrance; there are several pavilions and the location and temple grounds are very attractive. Just north of Kratie, rare freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins make their home in the Mekong River and can often be seen.
