Laos

Tucked away between Thailand and Vietnam, its geography dominated by mountains and forests, Laos has often been described as a country forgotten by the rest of the world. But it is this very fact, in contrast to its more developed neighbours, that makes Laos such a fascinating country to visit today.
They say in Indochina that the Vietnamese plant the rice, The Khmer watch it and the Lao listen to it grow. So come prepared for a dramatic change in the pace of life where the simple and leisurely still hold sway.

Weather
The best time to visit Laos is during our winter from November to April when the humidity is lower. During this time the days are comfortable and the nights pleasantly cooler. From May to October it is the rainy season with tropical downpours a likelihood most afternoons.
Local Customs
When visiting any foreign country it is always polite to respect the local customs. Take the time before your trip to read up on the countries you will be visiting and perhaps learn a few words of the language.
90% of people in Laos are Buddhists so it is not essential to wear long trousers or skirts. However clothes should be a little more conservative when travelling around in rural areas. Shoes should be removed before entering a pagoda or Buddhist temple.
Visas
Visas are required for all nationalities. These can be obtained at the airport on arrival or on the land borders upon payment of $30 USD in cash. You will need to take a couple of passport photos with you.
Vaccinations
You will need to take prophylactic measures against Malaria. It is also recommended that your vaccinations for polio, hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus are up to date.

Flight duration
There are no non stop flights from London to Laos. The most direct flights are via Bangkok, with a change of plane and take in the region of 15 hours.
Accommodation
In the main cities we use excellent quality 4 star hotels, some of which are traditionally styled. Outside, we use a variety of accommodation including guesthouses, the Mekong River barge (first class) in northern Laos and the Vat Phou cruise boat (deluxe) in southern Laos.
Transport
A variety of transportation will be used on tour: private saloon cars, minibuses or coaches, depending on the size of the party. The main road running from north to south Laos is good and most roads are of a reasonable quality, although in northern Laos the roads are quite bumpy.
