Lebanon

Thanks to their position at the heart of the Middle East, Syria and Lebanon share a fascinating and ancient history and rich cultural heritage. The attraction of Syria and Lebanon also lies in the diversity of landscapes, from the rocky Mediterranean shores in the West, through olive groves and mountains, valleys and plains to the Syrian desert in the east and the River Euphrates. Syria and Lebanon among the very early centres of civilisation and by 3000 BC, Mari on the Euphrates and Byblos on the Mediterranean were already powerful trading cities. In Syria, the highlights of any trip are: Damascus, the oldest inhabited capital in the world, centre of the Arab world in the 7th century; Palmyra, the breathtaking Roman site in the heart of the Syrian desert and Krak des Chevaliers, the largest and most imposing Crusader Castle in Syria. In Lebanon, Beirut, Baalbeck and Byblos should not be missed.
Weather
Lebanon has a remarkably varied climate, due to two mountain ranges and its location on the Mediterranean coast. Along the coast summers are hot and muggy, while autumn and winter can bring periods of cloud and rain interspersed with bright spells. The best times to visit are in the spring and autumn when the weather is warm and sunny, but humidity is not too high.
Local Customs
Lebanon is one of the more relaxed Muslim countries and Beirut is a cosmopolitan city. It is advisable that ladies should not wear revealing shorts or dresses in the streets of Moslem towns. Loose fitting trousers are ideal. When entering a mosque or church, women should cover their heads and shoulders and men should wear long trousers.
Visa
We advise British passport holders that they obtain a Lebanon visa before arrival. The consular fee for a single entry tourist visa is currently £20.00. Currently you can obtain a visa on arrival, though please check at the time of booking as the situation could change. Most other nationalities also require a visa.
Vaccinations
Nothing compulsory, but we recommend protection against, Tetanus, Typhoid, infectious Hepatitis and Polio. It is your responsibility to check all relevant recommendations and also to get the most up-to-date health information for the destinations being visited.
