Silk Road & Beyond

Libya

Its perception largely clouded by its modern history, Libya is a vast country whose position along the north African trade routes gave rise to settlement by, among others, the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans before Islam came in the 7th century AD.

The remains of these ancient cities are truly startling and Leptis Magna can easily lay claim to being the most impressive in the world. This country of arid desert landscapes and lush coastal regions receives a fraction of the visitors to its neighbours, so the sites as yet remain uncrowded.

Travel Essentials
Weather
Libya’s arid desert climate is moderated on the coast by the Mediterranean Sea. Average January temperatures vary from 11c degrees in the north to 17c degrees in the south. Corresponding figures are 28c degrees and 38c degrees in July. Some of the hottest temperatures ever have been recorded in Libya, avoid the months of July, August and September.

Local Customs
When visiting any foreign country it is always polite to respect the local customs. Take the time before your trip to read up on the countries you will be visiting and perhaps learn a few words of the language.

Life in Libya is regulated fairly strictly along socialist and Islamic principles. Generally speaking, Arab courtesies and social customs prevail and should be respected. Social life tends to be quite formal. Men’s dress should be conservative and women should dress circumspectly.

Alcohol is strictly prohibited but smoking is common.
