Wat Xieng Thong Temple Laung Prabang
Luang Prabang, the former royal capital of Laos sits at the junction of the Mekong and its tributary the Khan River. Considered to be the jewel of Indochina, it was designated a Unesco World Heritage site in 1995. Mount Phousi dominates the town and from its summit, stunning views of the surrounding temples and hills are offered. The largest concentration of temples is in the old quarter of the city which forms the peninsula between the two rivers. The most magnificent of temple is Wat Xient Thong Temple, with its low sloping roof and ornately carved pillars.
The former Royal Palace, now houses the National Museum. Located on the bank of the Mekong River and facing Mount Phusi the museum has a fine collection of Lao treasures including the Royal throne from the Lan Xang kingdom as well as many other religious artefacts.
Passing through many small villages on the outskirts of this fantastic city, you will arrive at the Kuang Si Waterfalls. Set in a lush forest the falls are graced by many small pools, ideal for swimming.
A fascinating excursion also on offer, is a memorial boat journey on the Mekong river to the Pak Ou caves. The two caves contain the temples of Tham Ting and have an enchanted feel. The craggy mountain scenery is breathtaking, with overhanging cliffs towering above the swift flowing river. Set within the limestone cliffs, surprisingly, the caves are brimming with thousands of wooden Buddha’s.
Luang prabang is a city rich in wonders, which is best explored with the help of a guide, and then on foot at ones own leisure.
