Phnom Penh

Royal Palace Phnom Penh
On the west bank of the Mekong River, Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh is a cosmopolitan city, with a fading French influence. This city with its turbulent past blends the influences of Hinduism, Buddhism and French colonial architecture to create a vibrant and charming city. The city’s temples and museums are complemented by fine restaurants and an exciting nightlife.
The Royal Palace and Silver pagoda complex, with its five thousand silver tiles, tall ornate towers and delightfully caved woodwork is an essential port of call. The National Museum of Cambodia houses some fascinating sculptures in its four courtyards alongside its outstanding displays of Khmer crafts. The central market is a chance to try some tasty fruits, or haggle with the jewelry and antiques dealers whilst observing local Phnom Penh life.
Before visiting the haunting killing fields, of Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge, a glimpse into this horrifying time is offered at the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum. Some 17,000 people were murdered, just ten miles southwest of the city centre. Now more than 8000 skulls, arranged by sex and age, are displayed so that this time should never be forgotten.
