Yu Yuan Garden, Shanghai
Yu Yuan Garden, Shanghai
China’s most modern city, with some incredible 21st century architecture and the world’s first high speed magnetic train, Shanghai is bustling and lively 24hrs a day. Some shops, restaurants and business on the main streets stay open all night, under a myriad of blinking neon lights. The scene at the Bund, China's famous waterfront park, is even more colourful and charming. There is plenty of evening entertainment, and cultural events such as the famous Peking opera, ballet and theatre.

Shanghai still retains its Chinese culture and has many historical sights. You can spend time wandering through the narrow, winding alleys of Shanghai's Old Town or visit the Jade Buddha Temple built in 1882, one of the most famous temples in southern China. So named because it houses a priceless jade statue of the Buddha from Burma. The Yu Gardens is one of the famous gardens south of the Yangtze River. This classical Chinese garden contains pools, bridges, moon gates and latticed pavilions dating back to the 16th century. After a visit you can enjoy drinking tea and listening to Chinese music in the Huxinting Tea House next the gardens. The Shanghai Museum, opened in 1996 displays a fine collection of ceramics from every era, bronzes, calligraphy and furniture, displayed on five floors.

You can take a cruise along part of the Huangpu River and the Yangtze River estuary, for great city views and explore Shanghai international port. Before leaving Shanghai there’s excellent shopping along Nanjing Road, Shanghai’s Fifth Avenue offering the greatest array of stores, restaurants, sweet shops and fashion boutiques.
