Thailand

Thailand’s geographical and cultural diversity has made the country the most popular tourist destination in South East Asia, with an irresistible combination of striking natural landscapes, inspiring religious and cultural heritage, renowned hospitality and culinary traditions. From bustling and vibrant Bangkok, to the cooler Northern highlands or the unspoiled islands with white sand beaches and turquoise waters, Thailand has something to offer for every type of traveller.
Also known as Siam, "the land of the White Elephant" or the country of the Muang Thai (“the free”), Thailand takes pride in a long tradition of independence, as unlike all her immediate neighbours -Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia- the country never fell to a European colonial power. However, a long turbulent history has left the country scattered with impressive ruins and forgotten temples that disclose a rich past and provide endless possibilities to the traveller.

Weather
Thailand is located in the tropics and therefore the weather is characterised by high temperatures and high humidity levels throughout the year. March to May are the hottest months of year, while June to October tend to be the wettest, and November and December the coolest.
Local Customs
Although Thailand is a fairly liberal and modern country, public displays of affection are frowned upon. The majority of Thais are Buddhists so it is not essential to wear long trousers or skirts. However when travelling around in rural areas and villages we recommend that you cover your legs. Shoes should be removed before entering a pagoda or Buddhist temple. Small donations placed in the boxes found in temples are appreciated. Never let the soles of your feet face other people or any sacred monument, such as a statue of Buddha. Drugs are illegal and travellers should know that possession of even small quantities can lead to imprisonment, and that drug traffickers risk the death penalty.
Visas
Visas are not required by UK passport holders endorsed British Citizens to enter Thailand for periods of 30 days or less. Other UK passport holders do require a visa.
Vaccinations
Malaria is a risk in some areas outside Bangkok and GPs could also advise immunisation against hepatitis A and typhoid fever. Vaccination against dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis is sometimes also recommended. Due to recent outbreaks of bird flu among poultry, you should avoid contact with live birds and all poultry and egg dishes should be well cooked. Although medical facilities are good in major cities, particularly in Bangkok, it is essential that you take a good medical insurance or you won’t be treated. Contact you GP for further advice on prophylactic measures against Malaria and vaccinations, or contact the following organisations:

Accommodation and Transport
In Bangkok we can offer a large choice of very good four and five star hotels. In the beach resorts we can also book from a varied selection of properties, from luxurious five star resorts to more simple hotels. In Thailand we normally use a driver or driver-guide for airport transfers or transfers from Bangkok to the beach, although we can also organise guided services.
